RIO VERDE, AZ –
The University of Iowa women’s golf team shot an 18-hole total of 303 to finish the first day of the 17-team East/West Rio Verde Invitational in third place. Arkansas-Little Rock leads after the first round with a score of 298.
Leading the way for the Hawkeyes, tied for 11th place, was junior Liz Bennett. Bennett fired a round of 75. Seniors Laura Holmes and Jennifer Reints and freshman Karla Murra all shot 76, which was good enough to place them tied for 16th. Junior Shannon Fleming carded a 83, which places her tied for 65th. Freshman Jessica Ellis is tied for 85th with a score of 87.
Kent State’s Gabby Wedding leads the field after day one with a score of 71. One shot behind in second place is Andra Lancaster of North Texas.
The final round continues tomorrow with a shotgun start at 2 p.m.
