Iowa City, IA – After finishing the weekend with an undefeated record, the University of Iowa Varsity 4+ crew was rewarded for their efforts and was named Big Ten Boat of the Week. This is the first time the Varsity 4+ has received this honor, while the Varsity 8+ has received the honor five times in the last four years.
On Friday, March 19, the Varsity 4+ crew, comprised of Sheena Williams, Allison Frederick, Sophie Nielsen, Kathleen Lehman and Katie Moe, opened the spring season with a victory over Texas. They posted a time of 8:08.2, defeating Texas by over 30 seconds.
The Varsity 4+ continued their dominance on Saturday, defeating Tulsa by 20 seconds. Iowa timed an 8:07.6, while Tulsa posted a time of 8:27.5. Crew members on Saturday’s team included: Vanessa Sheehan, Anna Battoe, Lesley Weston, Stephanie Beeler and Laura Balogh.
The Varsity 4+ wrapped up a successful weekend on Sunday, defeating Duke by nearly 20 seconds. The Hawkeyes posted a time of 7:30.2 to secure the win, with Duke finishing in 7:49.9. Crew members on Sunday’s team included: Lori Rehel, Allison Frederick, Sophie Nielsen, Kathleen Lehman and Katie Moe.
The Hawkeyes will next take to the water Saturday April 3, hosting Minnesota. Competition will be held on Lake McBride. The event is free to the public.
