Hawkeye Family Loses One

Gil Barker, who served as the official scorer at University of Iowa men’s basketball games for 30 years, passed away May 5 at the Crestview Care and Rehab Center in West Branch.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. Friends may call Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the West Branch United Methodist Church and one hour prior to services on Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, IA.

Barker, 75, a retired Funeral Director in West Branch and West Liberty, retired from his official scorer’s duties in 2000. He was inducted into the National Iowa Varsity Club as an honorary letterman in 2001.

Barker was a native of Burlington and a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School. He graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, MO. He moved to West Branch in 1958, where he purchased the former Anderson Funeral Home, and he purchased the former Snider Funeral Home in West Liberty in 1969. He operated both businesses until they were sold in 1996.

Barker was a member of the Iowa City Community Theater, where he was active in productions and served as president for two terms, and he was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. He was also active for several years with the Mid-Continent Railway Museum in Mt. Pleasant, IA, where he served as a conductor during the annual Old Threshers Reunion.
