The 2004 Iowa Hawkeyes have been plugged in at No. 19 in the first Associated Press Top 25 college football poll of the fast-approaching season.

The Iowa Hawkeyes completed the 2003 season ranked 8th by Associated Press after having blown out Florida in the 2004 Outback Bowl. It was the second straight Top 10 finish by the UI.

Coach Kirk Ferentz’s squad accumulated 518 points to finshed just behind Missouri (525) and ahead of Utah (446) in the first poll of the nation’s media. Southern California, Oklahoma, Georgia, Louisiana State and Florida State were Nos. 1 through 5. The Hawkeyes were one of six Big Ten team’s included in the poll. Michigan and Ohio State headed the list at No. 8 and 9, respectively. Wisconsin (No. 21), Purdue (No. 24) and Minnesota (No. 25) rounded out the list of Big Ten schools. Iowa opens its 2004 season Sept. 4 against Kent State in the “Throwback Game” at historic Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is slated for shortly after 11 a.m.
