Hawkeyes Fall to Wake Forest, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The University of Iowa field hockey team fell to the two-time defending NCAA Champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 3-2, in the 2004 season opener Saturday in Winston-Salem, NC.

Despite being out-shot 36-6, the Hawkeyes held a one-goal lead heading into the final ten minutes of the game. A penalty corner goal by Claire Laubach with 9:43 left tied the game at 2-2. Then, with 4:28 left on the clock, Kristi Harshman gave Wake Forest their first lead with a goal on a penalty corner. Lauren Crandall assisted on the game winner.

Iowa withstood a massive attack in the first 10 minutes of the game in which the Deacons took five penalty corners and 10 shots, six of which came from senior All-American Kelly Dostal. Iowa crossed midfield just once in the opening 15 minutes of play before Hawkeye freshman Kadi Sickel opened the scoring with her first-career goal at the 28:19 mark of the first half.

Laubach tied the game at 1-1 11:22 into the second half on her first penalty corner goal of the game. Just four minutes later, the Hawkeyes drew a penalty stroke that was converted by Lauren Stiver, giving them a 2-1 lead.

The Hawkeyes were unable to draw a single penalty corner in the game, while Wake Forest took 12. Hawkeye goalkeeper Barb Weinberg made 17 saves on the day.

Iowa will face North Carolina on day two of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, with the game starting tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CDT). The Tarheels defeated Michigan, 3-2, earlier today.
