PHILADELPHIA – The University of Iowa field hockey team picked up it’s first win of the 2004 season with a 5-1 defeat of Temple in the consolation game of the Temple Tournament Sunday afternoon.

Senior Sarah Dawson led the charge for Iowa, scoring a pair of goals and dishing out a pair of assists for a team-best six points on the day.

After back-to-back shutouts at the hands of North Carolina, the Hawkeye offense exploded for five goals in the first half against Temple’s all-American goalkeeper Erin Conroy. Just 2:10 into the game, freshman Kat Vella gave the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead by converting a pass from Dawson.

Dawson then chipped in a pair of unassisted goals at 9:55 and 22:45 to give Iowa a 3-0 lead. Senior Lauren Stiver converted a penalty stroke two minutes later to up the lead to 4-0, then Debbie Birrell gave Iowa its final goal of the day at 27:40 on Dawson’s second assist of the day.

Ashely Bird scored a goal for the Owls just before the half to cut the lead to 5-1.

Neither team could find the back of the cage in the second half, with each putting three shots on goal. Iowa goalkeeper Barb Weinberg made six saves on the day.

The Hawkeyes (1-3) will make their home debut next Friday with a game against Stanford. The contest is set to start at 3 p.m. at Grant Field.
