IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated the Pacific Tigers 2-1 in double overtime Thursday afternoon at Grant Field. With her head wrapped in gauze covering a deep cut caused by a wayward ball during the first overtime, junior Debbie Birrell gave Iowa the win with a goal at 6:39 of the second overtime.

Pacific jumped out to an early lead with a goal off the stick of Vianney Campos 5:12 into the game.

Iowa (5-5, 1-0) tied the game on a goal by Heather Schnepf off a penalty corner 5:12 into the game. Debbie Birrell and Sarah Dawson picked up the assists.

Neither team could crack the goal the rest of the way, and the game went into overtime. The Hawkeyes had two penalty corners with no time left in regulation but were unable to score.

Iowa also had a penalty corner with no time remaining in the first overtime. Kelly Slattery and Lauren Stiver each had shots on goal, but Pacific goalkeeper Kim Myers made a pair of great saves to keep the game going.

The Hawkeyes out-shot the Tigers 24-8 for the game, including a 8-2 advantage in overtime.

Iowa will return to action Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest against Ohio State at Grant Field.
