Hawkeyes To Close Out Season At Head Of The Iowa

IOWA CITY, IA

THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa rowing team will host its final meet of the fall season Sunday in Iowa City, IA. The 16th annual Head of the Iowa Regatta will be located on the Iowa River.

THE COMPETITION: Iowa State, Drake, Nebraska, Kansas and Creighton are just a few of the competing teams.

LAST TIME OUT: The University of Iowa rowing team competed at the Head of the Charles Regatta last weekend in Boston, MA.

The Hawkeyes were involved in two races. The Varsity 8 team finished sixth with a time of 13:35.349. The second Varsity 8 finished 20th with a time of 12:59 in a seperate race. Both events were in the Women’s Club Eights Division.

HEAD COACH: Mandi Kowal is in her 11th year as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Her most recent accomplishments include leading Iowa to the NCAA Championship meet three of the past seven years. Kowal was a two-time rowing World Champion in the Women’s Lightweight Four without coxswain in 1986 and 1987. She was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1987 by the US Rowing Association and was inducted into the United States Rowing Hall of Fame in 1997.

QUOTING COACH KOWAL: “We’re really looking forward to hosting the final event this fall. I’m looking for a better performance out of us and hoping to capatalize on some shifts in our team. This event means a lot to our seniors and I would like to them to leave here with a good experience.”
