IOWA CITY – University of Iowa senior field hockey players Sarah Dawson and Barb Weinberg were named to the United States National Squad. Tryouts were held at the USFHA A Camp in Virginia Beach, VA, January 14-17.

Sophomore Heather Schnepf and freshman Caroline Blaum were selected to the United States National Under-21 Squad.

“We are very excited to have four athletes representing the Hawkeyes on U.S. National teams,” Iowa Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. “All four were very consistent during A Camp, and all displayed their talents well. I look forward to watching them play for their country and keeping the Hawkeye tradition alive on the national team.”

Dawson and Weinberg were both first team all-Big Ten, all-Region and all-America selections this season. Schnepf was a second team all-Big Ten and all-Region pick.

The national squad will begin training for the 2005 Rabobank Champions Challenge to be held July 8-16 in Virginia Beach. The Champions Challenge will feature some of the best field hockey teams in the world, including England, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and Spain.

The Under-21 team will compete in the Junior Pan-American Championships March 16-27 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The top three finishers at the Pan-Am Championships are expected to qualify for the Junior World Cup this September in Santiago, Chile.

The last time Iowa had four athletes on U.S. National teams was 1996.
