Iowa women’s tennis player Anastasia Zhukova has been named this week’s Big Ten Athlete of the Week. This is Zhukova’s first career honor.
Zhukova went 4-0 last weekend against Iowa State and Northern Illinois. Against Iowa State, Zhukova, along with teammate Hilary Tyler, won No. 3 doubles against Chrissy Derouin and Charlotte Ljungkrantz. Zhukova then played her first singles match at the No. 1 position, decisively defeating Danielle Uscinski, 6-3, 6-1. Two days later, Zhukova continued her streak against Northern Illinois. At No. 2 doubles, she teamed with newcomer Jacqueline Lee to defeat Cassie Drake and Daniela Martinez, 8-2. At No. 4 singles, Zhukova was the first to finish her match, quickly winning against Martinez, 6-2, 6-0.
The Hawkeyes compete tonight at 6 p.m. against the Drake Bulldogs. Competition will take place at Clark Racquet Center on the campus of Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
