Be Bold, Wear Gold

Steve Alford is hoping fans of the Hawkeyes will make a big time fashion statement on Saturday when his squad entertains Michigan State at 1:30 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“Let’s face it, orange isn’t a great fashion color. So it would be really great to see the Arena filled with gold,” Alford said during his weekly radio show Monday night.

Alford is hoping the sellout crowd that will fill the Arena for Iowa’s tilt against the nationally ranked Spartans will provide the same emotional edge that the Hawkeyes were confronted with when they visited top-ranked Illinois two weeks ago and were greeted by a sea of orange.

So, “Be Bold, Wear Gold!” is the marching order for fans of the Hawkeyes who are making plans to be at Carver-Hawkeye Saturday.

“Regardless of whether Michigan State wins or loses tomorrow, they’ll bring one of the nation’s best teams to the Arena Saturday. It will be great for our guys to see the support in addition to feeling the support from our fans,” said Alford.

Michigan State, ranked No. 10 by both Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today, will entertain top-ranked Illinois Tuesday in East Lansing, Mich.
