THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa rowing team will compete in it’s first regatta of the spring season. The Hawkeyes will travel to the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, TX. Last year Iowa won the Longhorn Invitational and will try to make it two in a row.

THE COMPETITION: The Hawkeyes will be competing against Duke, the University of Victoria (Canada Crew), and Texas at the Longhorn Invitational.

FALL RECAP: The Hawkeyes won two medals in the Milwaukee River Challenge as three boats finished in the top five. The Iowa A Boat claimed third in the 4+ event with a time of 23:29.21. The Hawkeyes also won two medals in the Head of the Des Moines. In the Women’s Open Eight Race, the Iowa A team won with a time of 19.37. The A Team won the Open Pair event with a time of 24.44, while the B Team claimed second with a time of 25.24.

LAST TIME OUT: The University of Iowa rowing team hosted its fall season finale at the Head of Iowa in October. Overall, the Hawkeyes had seven top 5 finishes. The Hawkeyes placed second in the Women’s Open Eight. The Iowa A team finished the race with a time of 13:44.88. In Women’s Open Pair, the Iowa B team claimed second with a time of 16:41.62.

HEAD COACH: Mandi Kowal is in her 11th year as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Recent accomplishments include leading Iowa to the NCAA Championship meet three of the past seven years. Kowal was a two-time rowing World Champion in the Women’s Lightweight Four without coxswain in 1986 and 1987. She was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1987 by the U.S. Rowing Association and was inducted into the United States Rowing Hall of Fame in 1997.
