Iowa Fourth at Big Ten Meet

The opening round of the 2005 Big Ten Conference Women’s Golf Championship hosted by the University of Michigan and being staged this weekend on the UM’s par-72 championship golf course is nearing completion and Coach Bobbe Carney’s Iowa Hawkeyes sit in fourth place with an 18-hole team total of 308.

The Hawkeyes will play 18 more holes today and again on Saturday and Sunday on the UM Golf Course.

Ohio State – the tournament’s No. 1 seed and the defending Big Ten champion – is in the clubhouse as the leader after the first of two rounds scheduled for Friday. The Buckeyes shot a team total of 297. OSU was the only team to break 300.

The Hawkeyes, who entered the 72-hole event as the tournament’s No. 8 seed, were paced by Karla Murra, who fired a four-over-par 76. Amy Riepma and Jill Marcum each shot five-over-par 77s. Liz Bennett completed carded a six-over-part 78 in her first round of the day. Maggie Gelber and Shannon Fleming also competed for Iowa and registered scored of 85 and 86, respectively.

Purdue’s Onnarin Sattayabanphot is the first round leader. She was the only golfer to fire an even par 72.

Action continues with another 18 holes today, Saturday and Sunday.
