The Iowa women and men’s track teams hosted a cold, windy Musco Twilight meet tonight. Also competing in the meet were teams from Drake, Minnesota and Missouri. Despite the conditionsm 24 athletes from all four schools qualified for the NCAA Regional meet that will be held May 27-28 in Norman, OK.

The Hawkeyes did especially well in the throwing events in tonight’s meet, qualifying several athletes for the NCAA Regional meet. In the men’s discus, seniors Tim Brodersen and Andy Banse went 1-2, with tosses of 186-0 and 180-0, respectively. Sophomore Becca Franklin smashed her own school record that she set last week with a throw of 181-11 in the weight throw. In the shot put, the Hawkeyes again took first and second; senior Ken Kemeny threw 60-5.25 and Banse was next with 58-2.5. Senior Chris Voller won the hammer throw with a personal best toss of 200-0. Senior Kamesha Marshall took third in the women’s shot put with a throw of 48-0.75.

Another highlight of the meet was Meghan Armstrong’s performance in the 3,000 meter run. The freshman set a new Musco Twilight record with a time of 9:49.70. The Iowa women’s team won four individual events and took gold in the 4×100 meter relay. The Iowa men had four individual first place winners. Also, eight Hawkeye men set new personal bests and twelve women set new marks.

Next week the men and women’s teams will be competing in the Drake Relays held in Des Moines, Iowa.
