ANN ARBOR, MI – Due to inclement weather the final round of the Women’s Golf Big Ten Championships was cancelled today. Iowa finished sixth with a 54-hole score of 959. The Hawkeyes’ sixth place finish is their highest placement in the Big Ten Championships in seven years. Iowa also finished sixth in the 1998 championships held in State College, PA.
Iowa senior Liz Bennett paced the Hawkeyes after carding a 236 and tied for 14th place. Sophomore Karla Murra tied for 16th after posting a 237. Sophomore Amy Riepma tied for 28th (242), while freshman Jill Marcum tied for 34th (244). Senior Shannon Fleming and freshman Maggie Gelber both tied for 57th (259).
Ohio State (900) won the championships for the fourth consecutive year, finishing ahead of second place Michigan (932). The Buckeyes swept the top three spots: Kristen White (first), Lindsay Knowlton (second) and Jennifer Selfinger (third). White was named the Big Ten Player of the Year, while her head coach, Therese Hession, was honored as Coach of the Year. Purdue’s Whitney Frykman was recognized as Freshman of the Year.
This was the final competition for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2004-05.
