Five Hawkeyes Drafted, Three Others Sign

Five University of Iowa football players were selected in the National Football League draft this past weekend and three others have since signed on as free agents. The players are listed below.

Here are some Hawk facts on Iowa and the NFL draft…..

  • Iowa has had at least one player taken in the last 28 NFL drafts. The last year an Iowa player was not drafted was 1977.
  • The Hawkeyes have had 15 players taken over the past three years, the second most in that time span in Iowa history. The Hawkeyes had 16 drafted in the 1958-60 NFL drafts.
  • The Hawkeyes had 14 players taken in the 1984-86 NFL drafts.
  • Five of the 15 drafted players over the last three years came to Iowa as walk-ons. The walk-ons were Dallas Clark, Bruce Nelson, Derek Pagel, Pete McMahon and Sean Considine.
  • Iowa has had seven players taken in the first two rounds over the last three years.
  • A total of 21 Iowa players have been taken in the NFL draft since Ferentz became Hawkeye head coach.
  • The Hawkeyes, along with Wisconsin, have had the second most (18) players drafted out of the Big Ten over the last four years. Ohio State leads with 30.
