Today
A pair of college baseball teams eyeing a Big Ten Conference championship will square off at Duane Banks Field four times this weekend. The two teams both rest in second place, just a hiccup behind first-place Illinois.

Thursday, Feb. 6
The prelims are over and, now, Coach Larry Wieczorek and his UI men’s track team eyes the Big Ten Conference Championship next week at The Ohio State University. Iowa has qualified seven student-athletes for NCAA regional competition. Wieczorek thinks a couple of Iowa’s relay teams have a chance of joining that group.

Wednesday, May 4
Brent Balbinot visits with former Hawkeye all-American Marc Long, who is now the person in charge of both the Iowa men’s and the Iowa women’s swimming and diving programs.

Tuesday, May 3
Terry Anderson expects his Iowa men’s golf team to play with a chip on its shoulder this weekend when it travels to the University of Wisconsin for the 2005 Big Ten Conference Championships. He also expects his squad to play smart.

Monday, May 2
Hard-fought losses in the firs three games last weekend against Northwestern tested the mettle of Coach Jack Dahm’s Iowa baseball team. An extra-inning victory in Game 4 was evidence that the Hawkeyes were in the race for this year’s Big Ten Conference title until the end.

Friday, April 29
Iowa’s baseball team went back to the basics yesterday at practice in an effort to shore up some shaky defense and poor hitting that doomed them in two losses midweek. Coach Jack Dahm’s squad needs to relax heading into a four-game set at Northwestern that begins Friday at 3 p.m.

Thursday, April 28
The Iowa softball team has 41 wins to their credit and 10 home games left before the 2005 Big Ten Tournament. Gayle Blevins credits her team’s ability to focus and a year’s worth of experience as the difference between this year’s squad and last year’s.

Coach Steve Houghton talks about this week’s 2005 Big Ten Conference Men’s Tennis Championships and why he thinks the competition will be outdoors and the Hawkeyes may do better than some might think.

Tuesday, April 26
The NFL Draft was staged last weekend and five members of the 2004 Big Ten Conference champions had their numbers called. Brent Balbinot visits two for Hawkeyes.

Friday, April 22
Iowa defeated North Dakota State earlier this week thanks to the hard work of senior Jeff Maitland. It was the first start in two seasons for the left-hander, who appears nearly fully recovered from an injured elbow. “It’s really hard to say,” Maitland said when asked about how it felt to be back on the mound.

Thursday, April 21
The seventh annual Musco Twilight Invitational is scheduled for this Saturday evening at the Cretzmeyer Track on the UI campus. The Musco event has grown from humble beginnings to a major event and this year it will serve as a warm-up for next week’s Drake Relays.

Wednesday, April 20
A lesson was learned by the University of Iowa men’s golf team last weekend. UI Coach Terry Anderson says it’s as simple as “playing the scorecard.” Next up for the Hawkeyes is the very long Scarlet Course on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Tuesday, April 19
The 2005 volleyball season is months off in the distance, but that doesn’t mean there’s not work getting done in Coach Cindy Fredrick’s camp. An area that’s getting a lot of off-season attention is Iowa’s offensive gameplan. Fredrick’s also looking for team leaders.

Monday, April 18
Iowa’s baseball team is off to its best start since the 1990 season. Quality starting pitching was the answer to what the Indiana Hoosiers threw at the Hawkeyes last weekend. Iowa’s only loss in the four-game set with IU came on Sunday and, perhaps, the responsibility for that loss fell on the shoulders of the head coach.

The Iowa baseball team is riding a winning streak and a strong start in Big Ten play into this weekend’s four-game series with Indiana at Duane Banks Field. Despite the success, UI Coach Jack Dahm tells Brett Balbinot that there’s plenty of work to be done.

Brett Balbinot caught up with UI women’s basketball standout Jamie Cavey. The departing senior is in the running for yet another award and that one reinforces what fans of the Hawkeyes already know: The native Iowan is one special person.

Chad Greenway is the 15th University of Iowa football player to be named a pre-season all-American by Playboy magazine, but he’s feeling a little empty. His partner in tackles on the gridiron, linebacker Abdul Hodge, isn’t in the spotlight with him.

Bobbe Carney’s Iowa women’s golf team travels to Columbus, Ohio this weekend and do so with the momentum of four straight top 10 finishes. Carney and Brett Balbinot visit about adjusting to the changes in the game that come with the opportunity to practice outdoors.

Monday, April 11
Iowa’s offense hit another gear and the Hawkeyes came from behind to win three of four games last weekend at Michigan. Success like this will keep Iowa in the mix to recruit to the very best student-athletes from the state.

Friday, April 8
Iowa’s softball team returns to Big Ten action today after bouncing back from three-straight league losses last weekend with a victory earlier this week at Northern Illinois. Purdue and Indiana are waiting in the wings and Gayle Blevins says she’s expecting a solid performance from her Hawkeyes.

Thursday, April 7
Bob Rydze has traveled the globe during his 30 years of coaching some of the nation’s top divers. His latest success story involved UI junior Nancilea Underwood, who copped a pair of bronze medals in an international diving competition in China.

Wednesday, April 6
Salt Lake City here we come! Larissa Libby’s Iowa women’s gymnatics team will make its fourth straight NCAA Championship appearance Saturday when they square off against five nationally ranked squads.

Tuesday, April 5
Iowa begins its quest for its 37th appearance in the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship this weekend. Coach Tom Dunn’s squad is strong on the floor, but they’ll need to be strong across the spectrum of events if they are to advance out of the regional.

Jack Dahm’s Iowa Hawkeyes opened the Big Ten Conference baseball season with a split of four home games with the Spartans of Michigan State. “It’s nice to open the year in the middle of the pack versus the bottom,” said Dahm, after Iowa pounded 11 hits in Sunday’s 10-7 victory.

Friday, April 1Four members of the University of Iowa men’s track team have already qualified this year’s NCAA Regional Championship. The outdoor season is starting fast for Coach Larry Wieczorek’s squad.

Thursday, March 31The collegiate golf season is about ready to hit full stride. Coach Terry Anderson gives fans of the game and the Hawkeyes a sneak peek at this year’s squad and next week’s Big Ten season opener at Purdue. One stroke per Hawkeye per round will pay big dividends for theUI, says Anderson.

It’s back to business in the Iowa wrestling room. Jim Zalesky’s 2005-06 lineup will include four all-Americans and will return starters in every weight class. “Next year” began the day after this year’s national championship and the goal was clear: National champions in 2006.

It’s about competing and playing against the best to get better. That’s why Iowa’s baseball team traveled to Wichita State last weekend. It was a measuring stick for Jack Dahm as he prepares his team for this weekend’s Big Ten Conference season opener against Michigan State.

Thursday, March 8It’s a long week – the longest of the season – for Coach Lisa Bluder’s Iowa women’s basketball team. Sunday is Selection Sunday and it’s then Bluder’s Bunch will learn their NCAA fate. Until then, it’s a little bit of a lot of things for the coaching staff and the Hawkeyes.

Kenny Arnold played an integral part of the UI’s 1980 Final Four team. He suffered a stroke in 1985 and hasn’t been the same strong, quick man since. Today, his teammates are lending a helping hand.

Six different teams have won the Big Ten Conference tournament. Iowa, the No. 7 seed in the league’s annual party, meets Purdue on Thursday in first round action. Coach Steve Alford’s Hawkeyes will take a three-game winning streak into the Windy City.

Marc Long, a six-time all-American swimmer at the UI, is now in charge of both the men’s and women’s swimming programs at Iowa. Gary Dolphin visits with the former Hawkeye about his newest challenge.

It’s also “Championship Season” on the mat with the 2005 Big Ten Conference Wrestling Championship being staged inside Carver-Hawkeye Area on Saturday and Sunday. Jim Zalesky says his Hawkeyes have to force their style on their opponents this weekend.

It’s “Championship Season” for Big Ten Conference women’s basketball programs like Lisa Bluder’s. The Hawkeyes play Michigan on Thursday in first round action of the 2005 league tournament. It’s the first of what Iowa fans hope will be four games played in Indianapolis by Bluder’s Bunch.

Steve Alford’s squad broke into the Big Ten road win column last Saturday at Penn State. Now its Ohio State in the home season finale as the Hawkeyes look to build momentum heading into Chicago the second week of March.

Iowa’s Boys of Summer take to the playing field for the first time in 2005 tonight. Jack Dahm likes his pitching despite a lack of experience and a little bite from the injury bug. Dahm also thinks the 2004 Hawkeyes have speed and bat-on-the-ball ability that should put some pressure on their opponents.

It’s Senior’s Night on the University of Iowa campus. Coach Lisa Bluder’s squad will salute the efforts of five seniors who have been directly involved in Iowa’s climb back into the national stage.

Wednesday, Feb. 23
Jack Dahm wanted to build a foundation last year, his first, as Iowa’s baseball coach. That task accomplished, Dahm’s focus this year is to build on last year’s successes and to begin putting pressure on the Hawkeyes’ opponents.

One game at a time is a must now for Coach Steve Alford’s Hawkeyes, who travel to Minnesapolis on Wednesday for a date with Minnesota. “The guys are fighting,” Alford told Gary Dolphin, who also noted that the Iowa women are also taking that one-game-at-a-time approach as they attempt to tighten down a berth in the NCAA’s post-season party for women’s basketball.

A win on the hardcourt of Carver-Hawkeye Arena by Coach Steve Alford’s squad tonight gives Iowa a sweep of the intrastate series. The win won’t be easy to secure, however. Steve explains to Gary Dolphin in today’s installment of Inside Iowa.

Iowa’s wrestling program isn’t picked as high in the early-season rankings as it is accustomed. However, UI Coach Jim Zalesky isn’t as concerned about what those outside of his program think. He’s focused on those in Hawkeye workout room.

The Iowa women’s basketball team has surprised its opponents and even itself with its early season success. Now, it’s Iowa State in the new Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. High energy on and off the court would be big for the Hawkeyes. Libby’s squad and Coach Tom Dunn’s men’s team square off in the team’s annual Black and Gold event at 2 p.m. Saturday in the UI Fieldhouse.

It’s roundball season and while neither Iowa basketball team had much chance to work on their tans during their recent trips to Hawaii and the Bahamas, both came away with very strong performances.
