IOWA CITY, IA – The Setting
The University of Iowa Hawkeyes open the home portion of the 2005 season this weekend against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Iowa and Oklahoma State face off at 7 p.m. Friday. The Hawkeyes will take on Oklahoma Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can access live stats (Gametracker) via www.hawkeyesports.com.
Big Ten/Big XII Challenge
Both of Iowa’s home matches this weekend will be a part of the first annual Big Ten/Big XII Challenge. The challenge is a friendly competition between the two conferences and was created by coaches from each conference. Teams from the Big Ten and Big XII will square off at different sites throughout the weekend. A winning conference will be determined according to win-loss record and point differential.
Hawkeyes Fall to Colorado College
Iowa suffered a heartbreaking season-opening loss to Colorado College, 1-0 last Friday. The Tigers scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute to seal the victory.
The Hawkeye offense nearly netted a goal in the last ten minutes, recording five shots including two which rang off the crossbar and post. Senior Katelyn Quinn led the offense, recording four shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt kept the Hawkeyes in the match, recording all four of her saves in the second half.
Iowa Wins Thriller
The Hawkeyes defeated Air Force, 3-2 in overtime Sunday to record their first victory of the season. Freshman Kelsey Shaw scored the game-winning goal off a free-kick from Quinn three and half minutes into the overtime period for the win.
Freshman Stephanie Hyink scored her first two goals as a Hawkeye, assisted on both goals by sophomore Sarah Stephenson.
Boldt once again had a stellar performance, recording three of her four saves in the final 12 minutes.
Scouting Oklahoma State
The Oklahoma State Cowgirls are 2-0 overall.
Yolanda Odenyo leads the Cowgirl offense. She has two goals off 10 shots. Four other players have scored a goal.
Jeanne Rankin is 2-0 between the posts and has not allowed a goal this season.
The Cowgirls are coached by Karen Hancock. This is the first meeting between the two teams.

Scouting Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Sooners are 2-0 overall.
Allyson Kucera leads the Sooner offense. She has two goals off nine shots. Three other players have scored a goal.
Jennifer Nichols has played every minute in goal this season. She has 12 saves and has allowed one goal.
The Sooners are coached by Randy Evans. This is the first meeting between the two teams.
Iowa in Home Openers
Iowa is 5-3 all-time in home opening games.
In addition, Iowa is 1-2 in home openers and 10-13-3 overall at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
Against The Big XII
The Hawkeyes are 4-7-1 all-time vs. the Big XII.
Iowa has faced Baylor (1-0-0), Kansas (1-1-0), Iowa State (2-3-1), Missouri (0-2-0) and Nebraska (0-1-0).
Freshmen on Fire
All of Iowa’s goals last weekend were scored by freshmen. Stephanie Hyink recorded two while, Kelsey Shaw netted the game-winning goal against Air Force.
Opponents in the Rankings
Four Big Ten schools are ranked in the Soccer Buzz poll. Penn State (6th), Ohio State (13th), Wisconsin (16th) and Michigan (29th) are all ranked. The first NSCAA/adidas poll will be released on Sept. 6th.
Big XII Flavor at Home
All of Iowa’s non-Big Ten matches at the Iowa Soccer Complex are against Big XII opponents. Iowa hosts Oklahoma State and Oklahoma as a part of the Big Ten/Big XII challenge along with hosting Iowa State and Missouri.
