Hawkeye Hurricane Relief

Sept. 9, 2005

The University of Iowa has finalized plans for a UI community-wide fund-raising effort on behalf of the Grant Wood Chapter of the American Red Cross in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The “Hawkeye Hurricane Relief” campaign will take place at a variety of locations throughout Iowa City, Coralville and on the UI campus next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17.

On Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., University of Iowa students, staff and faculty will staff 15 to 20 “can stands” throughout greater Iowa City and Coralville where people may make donations of cash or personal checks.

On Saturday from noon until 2:30 p.m. volunteers will again collect donations of cash and personal checks at locations around historic Kinnick Stadium prior to the Iowa football team’s home game against Northern Iowa.

University officials indicate that all volunteers participating in this coordinated effort to provide assistance to those in need in the stricken area will be clearly identified.

All funds collected during the two days’ of activities will go toward hurricane relief. Checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross. Only monetary gifts will be accepted.
