Iowa Defeats Coastal Carolina University

The University of Iowa volleyball team added one more to the win column after defeating Coastal Carolina University in three games, 30-23, 30-22, and 30-20. The Hawkeyes faced the Lady Chanitcleers in the first round of their home tournament, the Microtel Inn & Suites CCU Classic.

In game one, Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but several errors helped Iowa to a 12-8 advantage. Errors continued to plague both teams in the first game, and the Lady Chanitcleers pulled within two points of the Hawkeyes, 18-16, but Iowa went on to close the game out, 30-23.

Iowa won game two, 30-22, and game three by a score of 30-20. In the final game of the match, the Hawkeyes were ahead 26-20 when Coastal committed four straight errors to end the game.

The Hawkeyes were led by freshman Catherine Smale with 13 kills and only one error for a kill percentage of .429. Stacy Vitali was next with 11 kills. Sophomore Tiana Costanzo was perfect on the night with ten kills and no errors for a .526 attacking percentage.

Kiley Fister registered 37 assists for Iowa and also had 11 digs. Libero Emily Hiza and Costanzo each had 12 digs in the win.

Iowa faces North Carolina A&T tomorrow at 11 a.m. and East Tennessee State at 3:30 p.m.
