Box Score

The University of Iowa field hockey team (10-7, 3-3) can’t wait to return to Iowa City and their home turf after a disappointing weekend in Michigan. The tenth-ranked Hawkeyes lost their second consecutive match today in a 5-2 shootout with No. 16 Louisville (13-6) at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, MI.

The game didn’t look like it would have a dreary ending at the start. Iowa’s Kara Zappone passed the ball to teammate Kadi Sickel on the right side of the cage for the game’s first goal and the 1-0 lead. The Hawkeye defense played tough for the next several minutes fending off two shots on penalty corners by the Cardinals. A third penalty corner, however, was successful when Jessica Javelet tipped in the ball for a goal on a shot by Lisa Wasser. Louisville had six more shots in the half, but the when the break came the score was still knotted at 1-1.

Senior Jen Payne scored the go ahead goal for the Cardinals at the 44:11 mark. Louisville then scored their second penalty corner goal just six minutes later to take a 3-1 advantage and added one more goal to their lead when Casey Deiner scored. Deiner struck again two minutes later at the 62:26 mark to give Louisville a commanding 5-1 lead. Iowa managed to put one more goal in the net when junior Kelly Slattery pushed in a rebound off Louisville’s goalie, Marie-Claire Heller. By that time just four minutes remained and the Hawkeyes were sent back to Iowa with an 0-2 record on the weekend.

The Hawkeyes spent the majority of the contest playing defense against Louisville. The Cardinals, who compete in the Big East Conference, took 15 shots in the game compared to just eight by Iowa. They also had eight penalty corners to only three by the Hawkeyes.

Iowa goalie Lissa Munley stopped two Louisville shots in the game, but allowed five goals. With 32 goals scored against her this season, Munley has a 1.89 goals against average. Her 73 saves translate into a .695 save percentage.

Iowa returns home this week to host the 2005 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament at Grant Field in Iowa City. The tournament starts on Nov. 4 and concludes with the championship game Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. The seedings for the tournament will be released by the Big Ten following action this weekend.
