COLUMBUS, OH – The University of Iowa women’s swimming team finished the Big Ten Championships in tenth place with 163.5 points. Penn State won the team title with 552 points. Senior diver Nancilea Underwood was named second team all-Big Ten in the one-meter.
In the 200 yard backstroke, senior Kelly Werner recorded a NCAA `B’ time of 2:00.74 while placing seventh. Fellow senior Katie Martin also recorded a NCAA `B’ time of 50.93 in the 100 yard freestyle, placing 14th. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Martin, Werner, Robin Samples and Karen Kelly finished ninth and recorded a NCAA `B’ time of 3:24.51. Three Hawkeyes raced in the 1,650 yard freestyle finals: Ashley Dell (17:10.50), Heather Hall (17:33.96) and Jaclyn Sarna (18:21.98).
The next scheduled competition for the Hawkeyes will be the Iowa Senior Championships in Iowa City, March 3-5. The diving team will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships at the NCAA Diving Qualifying Meet, March 9-11 in Columbus, Ohio. Those swimmers who have recorded NCAA `B’ times have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
