Watch The Celebration

March 13, 2006

A few thousand brave souls charged through thunderstorms that rumbled through eastern Iowa last night to greet Steve Alford’s Iowa Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and celebrate Iowa’s 2006 Big Ten Conference Tournament championship.

Led by the tournament’s most valuable player, senior guard Jeff Horner, and a talented and confident cast of Hawekyes, Iowa defeated Minnesota, Michigan State and, Sunday afternoon, Ohio State – the Big Ten’s regular season champion – to claim its second league tournament title and the Big Ten’s automatic entry in the Big Dance, the 2006 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Iowa’s reward for its efforts? A No. 3 seed in among the field of 65. The Hawkeyes open that part of their journey Friday against Northwestern State in a first round game to be played in The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Mich.
