THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team will travel to the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, IL, Thursday-Sunday. Iowa received a first-round bye and will begin competition on Friday. Competition will take place at the Atkins Tennis Center and will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday-Sunday. Championship play on Sunday will begin at 12 p.m.

THE HAWKEYES — The Hawkeyes ended the regular season with a 9-1 Big Ten record, the best Big Ten record in the history of Iowa women’s tennis. Iowa is ranked 30th, with a 17-4 overall record. Individually, Meg Racette is ranked No. 41 in singles and Mili Veselinovic is ranked 82nd. Others expected to compete for the Hawkeyes are Jacqueline Lee, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Krissy Dowlin and Hillary Mintz.

THE COMPETITION — Northwestern is first in the Big Ten with an 18-4 overall record including 10-0 in the conference. Michigan is third, Indiana is fourth and Purdue is fifth. No. 2 Iowa will face the winner of the match-up between No. 10 Illinois and No. 7 Ohio State.

LAST TIME AT BIG TENS — Iowa went into the 2005 Big Ten tournament as the third seed. Iowa defeated Purdue in the quarterfinals, 4-0. In semifinal play, Iowa fell to Michigan, 4-3.

LAST MEET — Iowa hosted Purdue and Illinois last week, defeating both teams, 5-2.

HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan — Coach Greenan is in his second season as head coach for the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 17-4 overall record in 2006, going 9-1 in Big Ten competition for a second place finish in the conference. Greenan has a 31-14 overall record in two seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and begins her fourth season with the Hawkeyes.
