Former Hawkeyes Selected to Play in the World Cup

IOWA CITY –

Two former Iowa field hockey players, Sarah Dawson and Barb Weinberg, were named to the 18-member roster for the USA national team which will compete next month at the Samsung World Cup in Madrid, Spain.

Dawson and Weinberg were both on the roster during the Astro Turf March on Madrid Four Nation Tournament in which they played No. 1 The Netherlands, No. 2 Argentina and No. 4 Australia. The USA finished fourth.

Dawson, a midfielder, and Weinberg, a goalkeeper, played for the Hawkeyes from 2001-04. During the 2004 season, Dawson and Weinberg earned first team all-Big Ten, all-Region and all-American accolades.

The USA is set to play their World Cup opener on September 27 against Argentina. These two teams met up during the Astro Turf March on Madrid Four Nation Tournament in which the USA earned 2-1 victory, their first victory over Argentina in 16 years. USA’s second game is scheduled against Australia on September 28. Australia tied the USA 1-1 during the Astro Turf March on Madrid Four Nation Tournament.
