Hawkeyes To Begin Fall Season This Week

THIS WEEK — Iowa women’s tennis will begin its fall season in Minneapolis, MN, at the Gopher Invitational. Competition will take place at the Baseline Tennis Center, Friday through Sunday. Competing for Iowa will be Mili Veselinovic, Jacqueline Lee, Hillary Mintz, Kayla Berry, and freshman Kelcie Klockenga.

THE HAWKEYES — Junior Mili Veselinovic is ranked 57th in preseason rankings, while senior Hillary Mintz is ranked #123. Mintz and teammate Jacqueline Lee are ranked 50th in doubles.

THE COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes will face players from Minnesota, Nebraska, Gonzaga, Air Force, Wichita State, Boston, and Missouri. Nebraska finished the 2006 season ranked 43rd. Sophomore Imke Reimers is ranked 106th in preseason rankings.

LAST SEASON — The Hawkeyes ended the 2006 season with a 9-1 Big Ten record, the best league record in the history of Iowa women’s tennis. Head Coach Daryl Greenan was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Iowa defeated Illinois in the first round of the Big Ten Championships (4-0) before falling to Michigan in the semifinals (4-3). The Hawkeyes faced Florida International at regionals, and were defeated, 4-1, in the first round. Iowa finished the season ranked 33rd nationally, with an 18-6 overall record.

HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan — Coach Greenan begins his third season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to an 18-6 overall record in 2006, going 9-1 in Big Ten competition for a second place league finish. Greenan has a 32-17 overall record in two seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and begins her fifth season with the Hawkeyes.
