University of Iowa linebacker Mike Klinkenborg has been named the Walter Camp Football Foundation Defensive Player of the Week. Klinkenborg helped Iowa to a 27-17 win over Iowa State Saturday, just six days following the death of his father.
Klinkenborg, a junior from Rock Rapids, IA, record eight tackles in helping the Hawkeye defense keep Iowa State scoreless for the final 23 minutes of the contest. He is Iowa’s leading tackler after three games with 31 stops. Klinkenborg now becomes eligible for the season ending Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Klinkenborg’s father Myron, passed away last Sunday following an apparent heart attack. Mike returned to the team Thursday and started against Iowa State.
The nationally ranked Hawkeyes return to action Saturday. Iowa plays at Illinois in its 2006 Big Ten Conference season opener.
