Evanston, IL – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by Northwestern, 1-0 Friday in its opening match of Big Ten play. The match was called in the 72nd minute after a 90 minute rain delay.
Heavy thunderstorms and a tornado warning forced the teams off the pitch in the 72nd minute. Play was ready to resume again after the 90 minute delay, but officials called the match due to darkness.
Senior goalkeeper Ali Becker returned to the lineup after missing five games with an injury and recorded three of her four saves in the first half. Iowa tallied four first half shots but could not find the back of the net. The match remained scoreless into halftime.
Northwestern tallied the lone goal of the match in the 54th minute when Jeanette Lorme scored off an assist from Jenny Dunn. The match was called 18 minutes after the goal.
Sophomore Stephanie Hyink led the Hawkeye offense with four of the team’s five shots. Junior Kelsie Full tallied the other shot for Iowa.
“Tonight was the type of soccer and the level of effort we would like to continue through season,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “We wish we could have gone the full 90 minutes and seen the result that could have been produced.”
Iowa travels to Madison to face Wisconsin Sunday. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
