MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened the fall season Friday at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, MN. The Hawkeyes faced competition from Drake, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Iowa began the day with singles competition against Wisconsin. This gave Hawkeye freshmen Tommy McGeorge, Patrick Dwyer and Reinoud Haal their first matches in black and gold. McGeorge played in the No. 1 spot, followed by Dwyer at No. 2 and Haal in the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Greg Holm and senior Scott Elwell rounded out the Hawkeye delegation in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Iowa suffered five singles losses in their opening competition.
Next, the Hawkeyes took on Minnesota in singles competition. With a shifted line-up, the Hawkeyes snagged their first win of the tournament. McGeorge defeated Sion Wilkins in the No. 2 singles match, 3-6, 7-6 (5), (10-5). Sophomore Mat Sawin and freshman Walker Grimes played their first matches of the season against Minnesota, but both players were defeated.
In doubles competition, Iowa swept Drake and lost two matches to Wisconsin. In the No. 1 spot, Holm paired with McGeorge. The team of Dwyer and Grimes played in the No. 2 spot.
The Hawkeyes will face New Mexico in doubles and singles, Drake in singles and Minnesota in doubles Saturday. Competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center.
