In a tight game, the University of Iowa field hockey team was upended by the Indiana Hoosiers 2-1 in Bloomington, IN. The loss gives Iowa a record of 0-3 in the Big Ten and 5-7 overall. Indiana’s record improves to 2-0, 10-1. The win gives Indiana its 10th consecutive win.
Indiana scored first when forward Kate O’Connell scored during the 20th minute of the game. Iowa stayed strong and did not allow the Hoosiers another goal in the half. The Hawkeyes out-cornered the Hoosiers 2-1 in the first period, but were unable to convert on either attempt.
During the second half, O’Connell was able to squeeze her second goal of the night past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley during the 41st minute off of a rebound. Iowa continued to play good defense and didn’t allow Indiana to score anymore goals during the game.
Senior Kara Zappone continued to play outstanding, scoring her fourth goal in as many games. Her goal was unassisted and came during the 67th minute. Unfortunately the Hawkeyes were unable to score anymore goals giving the Hoosiers the 2-1 victory.
In a very close game, the Hawkeyes out-shot the Hoosiers 8-7 and out-cornered them 5-2.
Iowa will resume action on Sunday, October 8th at 1 p.m. against Northwestern at Grant Field.
