TULSA, OK – Select members of the University of Iowa men’s tennis team traveled to Tulsa, OK, Saturday to compete in the 2006 Polo All-American Tournament. Sophomore Christian Bierich won twice and earned a spot in the third round.
Bierich began the day by defeating Martel Campbell of LSU, (6-3, 6-1). In the second round, he won a close match against Josh Zavala of Texas, (7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5)).
Juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie also competed Saturday. Ritchie defeated Derrick Lajola of Hawaii (6-2, 6-2) in the first round, but lost to Amrit Narasimhan of Memphis (6-3, 5-7, 6-4) in the second round. In the first round, van Monsjou defeated Evan Bridges of Texas (6-2, 6-2). Jay Weinacker of NC State dashed van Monsjou’s hopes of a third round birth and defeated him (7-5, 6-2) in the second round.
Bierich will compete in the third round of the Polo All-American Tournament Sunday. Play resumes at 8 a.m. in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
