Des Moines, IA – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team collected its fifth win of the season Sunday with a 1-0 triumph over the Drake Bulldogs. Sophomore Kelsey Shaw netted her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute for the win.
Sophomore Sarah Stephenson started the charge for Iowa with a pass down the wing to sophomore Stephanie Hyink, who played the ball across field and into box. Shaw took a touch into open space and drilled a shot from eight yards past Drake goalkeeper Erin Jarvis for the only goal of the contest.
The Hawkeyes outshot Drake, 8-6. Hyink collected three shots while freshman Kathleen Smokowski tallied two.
Senior Ali Becker recorded her second win and shutout in a Hawkeye uniform. Becker had three saves in the match.
“I was really pleased the way we defended after taking the lead,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “I thought we played a very good match and we are improving with every contest. We need to work on creating more chances after we take the lead, but we are happy to come away with a win.”
Iowa returns to Big Ten action Friday under the lights at the Iowa Soccer Complex against Ohio State. First kick is set for 7 p.m.
