<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>LOUISVILLE, KY- The University of Iowa men’s tennis team continued competition at the Louisville Invitational Saturday. The Hawkeyes, with a 31-7 record so far in the tournament, advanced three singles teams to the finals and three doubles teams to the semifinals.
In the quarterfinal round of doubles action, the Hawkeyes were undefeated. The team of juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated Graztki and Becker of Eastern Kentucky, 8-4. Freshman Patrick Dwyer paired with sophomore Greg Holm to defeat Thomas and Bush of Eastern Illinois, 8-3. In Iowa’s third match, freshman Reinoud Haal and senior Scott Elwell won an 8-2 match over Roby and Vance of Dayton. These three teams will compete in semifinal action Sunday.
Iowa’s success continued in to singles competition. In Flight A, van Monsjou didn’t let the hometown crowd bother him and took down his two opponents from Louisville. Ritchie won his first match, but lost his second to Low of Butler (6-3, 6-3). Freshman Tommy McGeorge advanced to the Flight B singles by defeating Perdoho of Ball State (6-3, 6-2) and Clos of Louisville (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). Haal also competed in Flight B, but lost his semifinal match to Breitenbach of Butler (6-2, 6-4). On the consolation side, Dwyer won two and advanced to the finals. Finally, in Flight C, Elwell defeated Roby of Bradley (6-4, 6-1) and Sivertsen of Lousiville (6-3, 6-2). Holm lost a semifinal match against Newmark of Butler (6-2, 6-2). McGeorge, van Monsjou and Elwell will compete for the championship titles Sunday.
“This is one of the best tournament performances for Iowa in recent years,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
The Hawkeyes will play their final matches in Louisville Sunday at the Bass-RuddTennisCenter.
