Iowa Advances At ITA Midwest Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed in qualifying singles matches at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament Thursday. Junior J.P. Ritchie, freshman Tommy McGeorge, and senior Scott Elwell won their matches and advanced to the round of 32.

Ritchie, seeded first in the qualifying draw, defeated Ryan Hamning of Cleveland State (6-2, 6-2). He will face Mpiloenhle Migogo of Indiana State Friday. McGeorge earned his way to the round of 32 by defeating sixth-seeded Evan West of Butler (6-2, 6-4). He will take on Mikey Kantar of Minnesota Friday. Elwell secured Iowa’s third win of the day by defeating Adam Ford of Northern Illinois (6-3, 3-6, 6-1). He will face 14th-seeded Jared Miller of Toledo Friday.

Sophomore Greg Holm also competed Thursday. He lost to Eric Breitenbach of Butler (6-3, 6-4). Holm will play in the consolation round Friday against 10th-seeded Brian Lipinski of Minnesota.

The Hawkeyes will continue competition Friday with the final qualifying singles matches at 8 a.m. and first matches of main draw doubles at 4 p.m. The team of Ritchie and junior Bart van Monsjou is seeded 15th. The teams of Holm and McGeorge and Elwell and freshman Patrick Dwyer are also scheduled to compete.
