Hawkeyes Host Head of Iowa

The University of Iowa women’s rowing team hosted the Head of the Iowa in Iowa City, IA. The regatta took place on the Iowa River and hosted over 420 boats; the largest ever for the Head of the Iowa. Both the varsity and novice teams competed in today’s event.

The novice team competed in the novice eight and the novice four. In the novice four the University of Wisconsin won the event with a time of 16:17.97, while Iowa placed 16th with a time of 19:07.09. Iowa had three boats compete in the novice eight, Iowa A (3rd, 15:23.16), Iowa B (5th, 15:35.45), and Iowa C (8th, 15:48.34). Kansas State (B) took first in this event with a time of 15:07.29.

In varsity action the Hawkeyes competed in four different events and placed in the top five in each event. Iowa had senior Jennifer Stachera (5th, 20:11.99) and sophomore Molly Tschantz (8th, 21:55.39) competed for them in the women’s open single. Minnesota led this event posting a time of 18:05.89. In the women’s open pair it was Wisconsin (12:27.43) in the lead, but the Hawkeyes placed all five boats in the top ten; Iowa B (2nd, 12:34.90), Iowa D (3rd, 12:40.83), Iowa C (7th, 13:00.40), Iowa A (9th, 13:09.28), and Iowa E (10th, 13:11.16). The Hawkeyes also had two boats in the women’s open four. Iowa A took third with a time of 15:53.41 while Iowa B placed 18th finishing in a time of 16:53.49. Iowa tied their highest place on the day in the women’s open eights where Iowa A placed second in a time of 14:44.64 and Iowa B placed sixth with a time of 15:08.72. Iowa A was close behind Minnesota A, who took first in this event finish in a time of 14:21.35.

“I thought we made a strong showing today. It is a great way to end the fall season and go into winter training,” says head coach Mandi Kowal.

The Head of Iowa finish the fall season for the Hawkeyes. They will return to the water in the spring season where they will open with the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, TX March 16th-18th.
