Hawkeyes Begin Play At Big Ten Singles Championship

ANN ARBOR, MI– The University of Iowa men’s tennis team traveled to Ann Arbor, MI, to compete in the Big Ten Singles Championship Friday. The Hawkeyes won three matches in the qualifying rounds and freshman Patrick Dwyer advanced to the main draw.

Freshman Reinoud Haal defeated B. Steele of Michigan State (6-4, 6-2), but lost to B. Lipinski of Minnesota (6-4, 6-3) in the round of 16. Senior Scott Elwell was also 1-1 on the day. He defeated A. Allon of Michigan State (2-6, 6-4, 6-3), but fell to G. St. Maurice of Penn State (7-5, 3-6, 6-4). Freshman Walker Grimes was defeated in the round of 32 by M. DePietro of Michigan (6-3, 6-2).

Freshman Patrick Dwyer didn’t compete in the first round due to a bye and went on to defeat A. Sanborn of Northwestern (6-4, 6-3) in the round of 16. With this win, he earned a place in the main draw.

The Hawkeyes will resume competition Saturday at 8 a.m. with the first and second rounds of the 64-player main draw.
