ANN ARBOR, MI– The University of Iowa men’s tennis team continued play in the Big Ten Singles Championship Saturday. The Hawkeyes won one match in the main draw and one match in the consolation round.
The Hawkeyes struggled in opening round matches. Iowa’s only seeded player in the main draw, 16th-seeded sophomore Christian Bierich was defeated by D. Ozanne of Ohio State (7-5, 4-6, 6-3). Fellow sophomore Greg Holm lost to S. Wilkins (7-6 (2), 6-3) of Minnesota in the opening round. Freshman Patrick Dwyer was taken out by M. Kantar of Minnesota (6-3, 6-2) and freshman Tommy McGeorge was defeated by fourth-seeded N. Polley of Wisconsin (6-4, 6-2). Junior J.P. Ritchie faced 11th-seeded A. Osorio of Minnesota and lost (6-2, 6-3). Junior Bart van Monsjou grabbed Iowa’s lone win in the main draw by defeating M. DePietro of Michigan (6-3, 6-1).
McGeorge, Holm and Dwyer were defeated in the consolation round, while van Monsjou fell in the second round of the main draw. Bierich secured a win in the first round of consolation and advanced to the consolation round of 16.
Competition will resume Sunday at 10 a.m.
