Iowa Soundly Defeats Texas Southern, 90-63

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Tyler Smith scored 25 points and Adam Haluska added 21 as Iowa defeated Texas Southern 90-63 Saturday.

Iowa (7-6) led the entire game and dominated from the opening tipoff with a 21-6 run that featured scores from every starter.

The Hawkeyes also forced 24 turnovers and committed a season-low nine of their own.

The Tigers (3-7) fell behind 31-11 with 7:16 left in the first half after Haluska and Smith hit consecutive 3-pointers. Texas Southern got within 17 late in the first half but Smith scored 10 points in the final 90 seconds to give Iowa a 49-27 halftime lead.

The freshman forward traded 3-pointers with Texas Southern’s Courtenay Brown before nailing another 3 near the top of the key. Smith followed with a pair of free throws and a spinning jumper in the lane to finish the half with 17 points — two more than his average.

Texas Southern continued to struggle in the second half, and failed to get the deficit under 20 points the rest of the game.

Brown led the Tigers with 19 points and five 3-pointers. Jacques Jones scored 16 and Chris Moore added 12.

The Hawkeyes secured their 300th win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
