IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming team honored six seniors in their final home regular season action Saturday morning. The 15th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Iowa men 156-82, dropping the Hawkeyes final record to 5-6 (1-3 Big Ten). The Iowa women squared off against the Illinois Fighting Illini and lost 174-126. The Hawkeyes end their season at 6-6 (0-4 Big Ten).
Sophomore Alison Gschwend and freshman Margie Chamberlin led the Hawkeyes with two wins each. Gschwend took first in the 100 back (58.14) and 200 back (2:05.33). Chamberlin placed first in the 100 fly (57.95) and 200 fly (2:06.01). Senior Emmy Haeger (100 breast – 1:06.18), sophomore Ashley Dell (1,000 free – 10:28.22), and freshman Deidre Freeman (three-meter diving – 272.35) added Iowa’s only other individual first place finishes.
Junior Dragos Agache picked up the Hawkeyes only individual win on Saturday, taking first in the 200 breast with 2:05.39. Senior Paul Divan added a second in the 200 breast (2:12.69) in his final home meet. Junior Nathan Keeling placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:55.88). Also adding runner-up finishes were freshmen Brian Farris (200 free – 1:45.07), Brad Jones (50 free – 21.87) and Wil Whaley (200 back – 1:51.17).
Both the men and women are done with their regular season action and will prep for postseason championships. The women head to the Big Ten Championships February 8-10, in Minneapolis, MN, hosted by the University of Minnesota. The men will be off until Big Ten Championships February 15-18, hosted by the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.
**Yesterday’s release incorrectly stated that Emily Hoefler competed in the 50 breast. She competed in the 500 free and placed first.
