The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team will compete at Illinois, Saturday. Competition will take place at Huff Hall and is set to begin at 7 p.m. (CST)
The Hawkeyes traveled to Raleigh, NC last weekend to compete against North Carolina State, Georgia, and Ohio State. Iowa placed third, scoring 193.750. Top performances for Iowa included Katie Turcotte on vault, tying for second place (9.9), and Katie Burke on beam, tying for sixth with a 9.825. Burke tied for third in the all-around with Kara Pinjuv, scoring 39.05. Iowa improved its total score more than a point in the competition, and is now 1-0 in conference action.
Scouting the Hawkeyes
Iowa returns seven letterwinners from last year when it finished with a 4-17 overall record. The Hawkeyes added five new members to the team for the 2007 season. Jenny Donar, from Cuba City, WI, Rachel LaCasse, from St. Charles, IL, Brittany Logan, from Edmonton, Alberta, Nikki Page, from Euless, TX, and Katie Turcotte, from Temecula, CA. All are expected to be solid contributors for the Hawkeyes.
Head Coach Larissa Libby
Iowa Head Coach Larissa Libby is in her third season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. In her first two years, Libby recorded a 12-31 overall record. Before becoming head coach, Libby was Iowa’s associate head coach for one year and an assistant coach for three seasons. While associate head coach, Libby led the GymHawks to a school record 49.425 beam performance in 2004. In addition, in 2004 the GymHawks recorded a 49.0 or higher seven times on beam under Libby’s guidance.
The Hawkeyes will host Northern Illinois, Winona, and UW-Whitewater Saturday, Feb. 3rd. Competition will take place at the Iowa Fieldhouse and is set to begin at 7 p.m.
