Minneapolis, MN – The University of Iowa Hawkeye women’s swimming team competed at day one of the 2007 Big Ten Championships on Thursday, hosted by the University of Minnesota. After the first finals round of the three day event, the Hawkeyes are in 10th place with 39 points. Leading the team race are the Michigan Wolverines with 215 points.
The Hawkeyes did have three season-best times. The 200 freestyle relay team of Julie deBruin, Christine Kuczek, Robin Samples and Emmy Haeger recorded an NCAA “B” time of 1:33.65, which ranks fourth on Iowa’s all-time top performers list. Freshman Kuczek also recorded a “B” time in the 50 freestyle with her time of 23.38. Kuczek’s time is a team-leading season best and ranks fifth on Iowa’s all-time top performers list. A “B” time provisionally qualifies athletes for the NCAA Championships. The 400 medley relay team of Alison Gschwend, Haeger, Margie Chamberlin and Kuczek placed seventh, with a season-best time of 3:47.56, which ranks fifth on Iowa’s all-time top performers list.
The Big Ten Championships will continue Friday morning with swimming prelims at 11 a.m., diving prelims at 1 p.m. and finals at 7 p.m. Fans can follow live action at www.gophersports.com.
