Due to severe weather and dangerous driving conditions in the Chicago area, the University of Iowa’s men’s basketball game with Northwestern, originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, has been postponed until Thursday, February 15.

The Northwestern at Iowa men’s game will start at 6:05 p.m. Thursday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena and will be televised on ESPN Regional as originally scheduled. The regularly scheduled Iowa women’s home game vs. Illinois will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the men’s game (approximately 8:30 p.m.).

“Our first concern is always safety,” said Gary Barta, UI athletics director. “In this case it involves the safety of the student-athletes and staff of Northwestern and fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes. No one can control the weather. We anticipate turning a scheduling challenge into a great opportunity for Iowa fans to see both our men’s and women’s teams in action on the same evening in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.”

Game tickets for either the men’s or women’s games will be honored Thursday evening. All students will be allowed into the arena free of charge. Fans who have purchased women’s tickets and wish to attend the men’s game, will be asked to be seated in sections G, H and I, above row 33.

Single game tickets for Thursday’s men’s game are on sale for $15, through the first half of that contest. Single game tickets for the women’s contest are being sold for $5.

“Our hope is that fans of both our men’s and women’s programs take advantage to catch a doubleheader,” added Barta. “These are important games for our teams as we head into the final month of the regular season. It provides a great opportunity for our students and fans to come out to Carver.”

“I hope our fans accept the challenge to come out and support our basketball team Thursday night,” said Iowa Men’s Coach Steve Alford. “We had severe weather before our Michigan game here in 2005. We didn’t play well and lost in front of a sparse crowd. We need our fans to show their support with their attendance on Thursday.”

“Our hope is that our fans will be able to still come out as we face Illinois in a pivotal game Thursday night,” said Iowa Women’s Head Coach Lisa Bluder. “It’s a great opportunity for Hawkeye fans to support both the men and women’s basketball teams in the same night.”

This is believed to be the first weather-related postponement of an Iowa men’s basketball game since January of 1979. A game vs. Indiana at the Iowa Field House, scheduled for Jan. 12, was postponed until Sunday, Jan. 13. The Hawkeyes defeated Indiana 90-61 when the game was played.
