Hawkeyes Upset No. 61 DePaul

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated No. 61 DePaul, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

The Hawkeyes secured the doubles point by sweeping DePaul in doubles competition. Juniors J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou teamed to defeat Doerner and Moncada, 8-3, in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 spot, the team of sophomores Christian Bierich and Greg Holm defeated Wang and Graetz, 8-0. In the final doubles match, freshmen Patrick Dwyer and Tommy McGeorge took down Grgec and Wilson, 8-7 (5).

Iowa won four singles matches to secure the win over DePaul. In the No. 1 spot, van Monsjou defeated Wang, 6-4, 6-0. Bierich was victorious over Doerner in the No. 2 match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. In the No. 3 spot, Ritchie defeated Moncada, 7-5, 7-5. McGeorge was defeated by Graetz in the No. 4 match, 6-4, 6-4. Holm lost to Grgec in the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-0. The Hawkeyes won the final singles match when Dwyer defeated Komar, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 6 spot.

“This was a very good win for us over a very good nationally-ranked team,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “It was probably one of our best wins in recent years. The team is playing with a lot of confidence right now.”

With this win, the Hawkeyes move to 3-0. They will return to action Sunday when they host Toledo. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. in the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
