MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated by Southern Methodist University Friday in Minneapolis, MN. SMU claimed the doubles point and three singles victories to clinch the win against the Hawkeyes, 4-3.
In doubles competition, the team of juniors J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou captured Iowa’s only doubles victory of the day. They defeated Kuczer and Solares, 8-5, in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 match, sophomores Christian Bierich and Greg Holm fell to Murgier and Hooshyar, 8-5. Freshmen Patrick Dwyer and Tommy McGeorge were defeated by Skrypko and Fahgen in the No. 3 match, 8-1.
Iowa claimed three singles wins in Friday’s competition. In the No. 1 spot, van Monsjou took down Murgier, 7-5, 6-3. Bierich captured a win by defeating Kuczer, 6-4, 6-2. Iowa’s final win came in the No. 6 match when Dwyer won by default. Ritchie, Holm and McGeorge were defeated in singles competition.
“We lost a very close match to one of the big names in tennis,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 4-1. They will return to action Saturday when they host Western Michigan at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Competition begins at 12 p.m.
