Hawkeyes Win Third Match In California

LA JOLLA, CA – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team wrapped up Spring Break competition Saturday afternoon in California. The 75th-ranked Hawkeyes defeated Dartmouth, 6-1. This was the third win of the Spring Break trip for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa began competition by securing the doubles point. The 28th-ranked team of juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated Waslen and Freeman, 8-3, in the No. 1 match. Freshman Walker Grimes and sophomore Greg Holm were defeated by Schechtman and McGaughey in the No. 2 match, 8-4. In the No. 3 spot, sophomore Christian Bierich and freshman Tommy McGeorge defeated Gayer and Tzou, 8-1.

The Hawkeyes sealed the win with five singles victories. In the No. 1 match, van Monsjou took down Waslen, 6-0, 6-1. Bierich fell in three sets in the No. 2 match to Freeman, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. In the No. 3 match, Ritchie defeated Schechtman, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Reinoud Haal defeated Tzou in the No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-1. In the No. 5 match, McGeorge was victorious over McGaughey, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the final singles match, Holm defeated Friedman, 6-4, 7-5.

“This has been a great Spring Break trip for us,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We haven’t gone undefeated on a Spring Break trip in a very long time. I feel like things are on the upswing.”

With this win, the Hawkeyes move to 7-3. Their next competition will be March 24 when they travel to Columbus, OH, to face Ohio State. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
