Hawkeyes Fall To Wisconsin, 7-0

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 45 Wisconsin, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. Despite several close matches, the Hawkeyes were unable to secure a singles win or the doubles point.

In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes won the No. 3 match. Freshman Reinoud Haal and sophomore Christian Bierich teamed to defeat Sonkin and Bellido, 8-5. The team of juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie were defeated in the No. 1 spot by Baumann and Kasarov, 9-7. In the No. 2 spot, Iowa’s team of sophomore Greg Holm and freshman Walker Grimes fell to Polley and Dierberger, 8-2.

In the No. 1 singles match, van Monsjou lost to Baumann by the score of 6-1, 6-2. Ritchie was defeated by Polley in the No. 2 spot, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 3 match, Bierich fell to Sonkin, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 (5). Haal was defeated in three sets by Kasarov, 6-4, 7-6 (7), 6-4, in the No. 4 match. Freshman Tommy McGeorge was defeated by Bellido in the No. 5 match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 6 spot, freshman Patrick Dwyer fell to Dierberger, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.

“The final score didn’t indicate that we lost five three-set matches,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.

With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 7-10 overall and 0-7 in the Big Ten. They will host their final home match of the 2007 season Sunday against Northwestern. Competition will begin at noon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
