May 2, 2007

IOWA CITY — “I won’t mind beating him,” laughs University of Iowa men’s basketball coach Todd Lickliter when asked about coaching against his good friend and peer, Ohio State’s Thad Matta, at the end of an interview by CSTV that is available free inside the Podcast area of the iTunes Music Store.

Lickliter talks about the challenges that face all NCAA Division I head coaches, noting that winning is important and “it’s why we keep score,” talks about the Big Ten Conference, notes that the men’s basketball program at the University of Iowa “is far from broken,” and smiles about informal gatherings at his home with his team and his wife, Joez’s contributions to those “NCAA-approved occasional meals.”

“There’s a real community feel here. They say it’s a good fit and I appreciate that.”

“It had to be special (for me to leave Butler) and it didn’t take very long for me to realize I’m in a special place,” Lickliter, the 2007 NCAA Division I Coach of the Year as selected by the National Basketball Coaches Association, said about his move to Iowa City.

“There’s a real community feel here. They say it’s a good fit and I appreciate that.”
