Talkin’ Black & Gold with Roy Justis provides a frequent look at the Iowa Hawkeyes, compliments of Roy Justis, a long-time radio personality in Iowa City, the home of the Hawkeyes, and a self-described “big time fan of the Hawkeyes and the University of Iowa.”

Talkin’ Black & Gold with Roy Justis is free content inside Hawkeye All-Access, the multi-media space inside hawkeyesports.com, the official world wide web site of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Fans of the Hawkeyes who want to listen to Talkin’ Black & Gold will not be required to pay any subscription fees, but they are required to register, a process that takes just minutes and will provide them access to all free content inside Hawkeye All-Access.

Tuesday, Aug. 18
Ten thousand fans in the stands, lots of kids awaiting autographs at Kinnick Stadium when the University of Iowa Hawkeyes took to the new turf for a two-hour workout on Saturday, Aug. 15. It wasn’t too warm, there was a nice breeze and a key point — when it was over there were no new injuries.

Friday, July 31
National academic honors for some University of Iowa swimmers and divers have been announced. UI head coach Marc Long talks about that, the final season in the 86-year old Field House pool and a tour of the new Recreation Center that is under construction.

Wednesday, June 17
The Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award will be presented Friday to the University of Iowa women’s basketball team. Hawkeye head coach Lisa Bluder talks about that and some of the nonconference teams Iowa has on the schedule for the 2009-10 season.

It was nearly a year ago that flood waters took their toll on the University of Iowa, including its softball complex. Here’s an update from UI head softball coach Gayle Blevins, who is wrapping up the Hawkeye softball camp for several youngsters.

University of Iowa baseball coach Jack Dahm plans to start five freshmen in the infield this week since injuries knocked out some key players…but first the UI rowing program scored a five-year high in points scored this past weekend at the Big Ten championship and coach Mandi Kowal is looking for some novice help to pick up the speed next time out.

The No. 17-ranked University of Iowa women’s rowing team will compete at the Big Ten Conference championships in Columbus, Ohio on May 2. Six of the seven league schools are ranked in the top 20. UI head coach Mandi Kowal says the Hawkeyes are `mentally in a really good place.’

Monday, April 20
Sharon Dingman, head volleyball coach at the University of Iowa, recently celebrated a one-year anniversary as a Hawkeye. Listen to what she says about the opportunities for women in sports. One of the biggest positives, she says, is an across-the-board improvement in the level of coaching in all sports.

The Equal Opportunity in Education Act (Title IX) has had a profound effect on educational opportunities for women in general, and in sports particularly. At the University of Iowa, former women’s athletics director, Dr. Christine Grant, helped lay the ground work for bringing women’s sport from the club level to the forefront.

Freshman Nick Brown and the University of Iowa baseball team is in the midst of a five-game home stand. The Hawkeyes play a three-game set against Indiana beginning Friday at 6 p.m. We’ll hear from Brown, a native of Warrenville, Ill.

By taking it `one opportunity at a time,’ the University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team hopes to post impressive marks at the NCAA regional meet Saturday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Although banged up, UI head coach Larissa Libby is not using injuries as an excuse.

Friday, March 27
The University of Iowa rowing team had to call off a matchup with Minnesota because the weather forecast included snow. UI head coach Mandi Kowal did get good conditions in Texas over spring break however, and some good results as well.

Wednesday, March 11
Treating every meet like her last has turned out to be a successful strategy for University of Iowa senior Jenifer Simbhudas. The Ontario, Canada native was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on March 9.

Thursday, March 5
The indoor track & field season is coming to a close and the University of Iowa has hopes of getting additional qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. UI men’s coach Larry Wieczorek gives us the results from the Big Ten and looks ahead to a Last Chance meet in Ames.

Wednesday, March 4
A clash between two top 24 women’s gymnastics teams will take place in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday when No. 23 Iowa hosts No. 24 Kentucky. Hawkeye head coach Larissa Libby says that her team is exactly where it needs to be and they are poised to be `very, very good and dangerous.’

Friday, Feb. 27
It’s time for the University of Iowa women’s basketball team to prepare for tournament play after saluting the 2009 senior class following a 69-56 win over Illinois on Feb. 26. Roy plays excerpts from UI head coach Lisa Bluder’s Tuesday media conference.

Tuesday, Feb. 17
There are many lessons to be learned by a student-athlete in today’s world of choices. One of the most important is time management. Meet University of Iowa women’s tennis player Alexis Dorr as she tries to balance time on the court and time in the classroom.

Monday, Feb. 16
The University of Iowa women’s basketball team turned up the heat and rallied past Penn State on Sunday, 63-57, for the biggest comeback win in school history. Combine that with a 10-point decision over Ohio State on Feb. 12 and Bluder’s Bunch has once again cracked the upper division of the Big Ten Conference.

Wednesday, Feb. 4
The University of Iowa softball team begins the season in Texas on Feb. 6. In fact, the Hawkeyes play 29 games on the road before their first home game March 22. UI head coach Gayle Blevins calls this schedule the hardest yet.

Thursday, Jan. 29
University of Iowa student-athletes Conor Dwyer and Frank Van Dijkhuizen were named Big Ten Conference swimmer and diver of the week following a big win over Northwestern on Jan. 24. UI head coach Marc Long takes a few minutes with Talkin’ Black & Gold.

Tuesday, Jan. 27
More than 3,700 fans came out on Monday to watch the University of Iowa women’s basketball team defeat Michigan 77-69 in Big Ten Conference action. UI freshman Kamille Wahlin played all but five minutes and compiled 14 points and 10 assists. Hawkeye head coach Lisa Bluder talks about the Freshman Factor.

Thursday, Jan. 22
The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team used a home loss on Jan. 9 as motivation for an excellent week of practice that led to wins over Michigan State, West Virginia and Illinois State eight days later. UI head coach Larissa Libby said the potential is great for the Hawkeyes this season.

After leading the University of Iowa volleyball program to its most successful season in eight years, head coach Sharon Dingman was walking out the door for a recruiting trip when she paused to share some thoughts with Talkin’ Black & Gold. Dingman said that her recruiting wish list is a more talented Hawkeye roster from a depth perspective.

Keeping the University of Iowa field hockey team grounded during its quest of an NCAA national title is a point of emphasis for Hawkeye head coach Tracey Griesbaum. Iowa will put its seven-game winning streak on the line when it faces Maryland on Friday at 4 p.m. (Iowa time).

Wednesday, Nov. 12
With two football games remaining in the regular season, University of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is quick to point out that nothing comes easy in the Big Ten Conference. `Purdue will be a great challenge,’ Ferentz warns.

The University of Iowa volleyball team fell to Indiana and No. 1-ranked Penn State last week. UI head coach Sharon Dingman says there is still a lot of season remaining, and she is proud of the Hawkeye strides thus far.

Wednesday, Oct. 29
A.J. Edds and head coach Kirk Ferentz know that a tough Big Ten road test awaits the University of Iowa football team Saturday at Illinois. Edds, a UI linebacker, said the Hawkeyes will need to play a full 60-minute game to come out victorious.

Tuesday, Oct. 28
The University of Iowa picked itself up after a loss at Michigan on Oct. 24 and defeated Ohio State on Oct. 26, snapping an 18-match Big Ten Conference road losing streak.

Monday, Oct. 20
It was a great weekend from a competitive standpoint for the University of Iowa women’s soccer team. Even though the Hawkeyes didn’t get the results they were after against Ohio State and Penn State, they will now be at home for the rest of the regular season.

Wednesday, Oct. 15
A physical, ball-control style is just the type of atmosphere where the University of Iowa offensive line thrives. After a big win last week against Indiana, the Hawkeyes are hoping to be bold and strike gold.

Wanted: a loud, supportive home crowd for the women’s soccer match against Indiana on Friday. The University of Iowa plays seven of its final nine matches at home, including two this weekend against the Hoosiers (Friday) and North Dakota State (Sunday).

It’s preparation time for the University of Iowa volleyball team that has won 15 consecutive sets and captured the championship of the Hawkeye-Holiday Inn Challenge last weekend in Iowa City. Iowa hosts Wisconsin on Friday and Northwestern on Saturday.

Monday, Sept. 22
The University of Iowa women’s soccer team faced two Big 12 teams last weekend and came out with a split. UI head coach Ron Rainey said the Hawkeyes (5-4 overall) had some nice finishes during a 3-2 win at Iowa State on Sunday.

Wednesday, Sept. 17
The University of Iowa football team heads to Pittsburgh on Saturday. The starting quarterback position for still “undecided,” the Hawkeye defense will try to contain a preseason All-American and what about the distraction possibilities? Roy covers it all, Talkin’ Black & Gold.

Monday, Sept. 15
The University of Iowa volleyball team was in Ames to take part in the Iowa State Tournament last weekend. After dropping a close match to Iowa State on Friday night, the Hawkeyes came back to defeat Xavier and Drake on Saturday. UI volleyball coach Sharon Dingman will bring the team home to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sept. 19-20 for the Hawkeye-Holiday Inn Challenge.

Monday, Sept. 8
The University of Iowa’s volleyball team had a victory over Tennessee last Friday, but looked flat in a loss to host Denver on Saturday. In its final game of the Pioneer Classic, Iowa was trailing 2-0 in the match before storming back to grab the victory. Iowa stands at .500 for the season with a record of 3-3 heading into another big week. Coach Sharon Dingman, in her first year as Iowa’s head coach, was impressed with what she saw.
