Hawkeyes Open 2007 Season At NIU Tournament

IOWA CITY – This Week
The University of Iowa soccer team will open its season by competing in the NIU Tournament on the campus of Northern Illinois University. The Hawkeyes will face Navy Friday at 2 p.m. and Northern Illinois on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both games will be played at the Huskie Soccer Field in DeKalb, IL.

Scouting Navy
Navy finished the 2006 season with a 21-2-1 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Midshipmen fell to top-seeded North Carolina in the second round.

Coach Carin Gabarra returns eight starters off last year’s team, including junior goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes, who was recently named to the 2007 Hermann Trophy Watch List.

This will be Iowa’s first match ever against Navy.

Scouting Northern Illinois
Northern Illinois finished last season with 8-11-2 record, including an appearance in the Mid-American Conference championship game.

Head Coach Marci Miller enters her third season at the helm, and returns 15 letterwinners.

Iowa holds a 3-1 series record against the Huskies.

Last Season
Iowa finished the 2006 season with a 6-11-2 record under first year Head Coach Ron Rainey. The Hawkeyes registered impressive wins over nationally-ranked Indiana, as well as in-state foes Iowa State and Drake. The Hawkeyes won more games during 2006 than the previous two seasons combined.

Experience Matters
The 2007 roster consists of nine seniors who will be counted on to carry the load for the Hawkeyes. Also returning are ten starters and 20 letterwinners from last year’s squad.

New Hawkeyes
Also appearing on the 2007 roster will be nine new members to the Hawkeye family.

Jenna Aleo, a defender/midfielder from Tinley Park, IL. Aleo is a three-time all-state selection.

Victoria Bachand, a defender/midfielder from Liberty Township, OH. Bachand netted 15 goals during her high school career.

Kali Feiereisel, a goalkeeper from Libertyville, IL. Feiereisel was a two-time all-conference selection.

Mandy Heimann, a midfielder from Naperville, IL. Heimann was team MVP as a sophomore at Neuqua Valley.

Amanda Martin, a forward/midfielder from Lewis Center, OH. Martin was an all-county selection three times.

Keli McLaughlin, a forward from Alsip, IL. McLaughlin was a two-time all-state selection.

Annie Shepard, a midfielder from Kansas City, MO. Shepard was an all-district and all-Western Region selection three times.

Stephanie Swanson, a goalkeeper from Downers Grove, IL. Swanson was an all-conference selection twice.

Clare Williams, a goalkeeper from Madison, WI. Williams was a three-time varsity letterwinner.

Across the Country
The Hawkeyes’ roster features players from nine different states across the country. The list includes seven from California. Illinois is next with six, followed by Wisconsin and Colorado with four. The state of Iowa is represented by three players, including senior Kelsie Full from Iowa City, senior Abby Gierke from Betterndorf, and sophomore Jackie Kaeding from Coralville.

2006 Big Ten Honorees
Eight players earned Academic All-Big Ten status during the 2006 season, including seniors Lindsey Boldt, Kelsie Full, Melisa Kaetterhenry, Abby Gierke and Claire Goldenberg.

Home Sweet Home
The Hawkeyes will play host to eight different teams during the 2007 season. Featured are home matches with nationally-ranked Penn State, Ohio State, and the annual rivalry match with Iowa State. Iowa also hosts Missouri for the Big Ten-Big XII Challenge.

Welcome Back Jackie!
After missing last season with a knee injury, the Hawkeyes welcome back sophomore Jackie Kaeding. She is the younger sister of Nate Kaeding, the former Iowa placekicker who now plays professionally for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers.
