Kremer Leads Iowa Past Saint Francis, 3-0

Greeley, CO – The University of Iowa volleyball team coasted past Saint Francis, 3-0 (30-16, 30-24, 30-24) Saturday at the Northern Colorado Tournament. Junior Laura Kremer led Iowa’s attack, recording a career-high 14 kills and hit at a .722 clip.

Kremer hit .833 in game one (five kills), 1.000 in game two (6-6) and .333 in game three (three kills, one error). Freshman Aimee Huffman tied a career-high with 12 kills and also added 13 assists. As a team, Iowa recorded a .308 attacking percentage and held Saint Francis to just a .086 attacking percentage.

Iowa set the tone in game one, storming out to a 5-0 lead. The Hawkeyes stretched the lead to 12-3 after two straight Megan Eskew kills. Iowa kept adding to the lead and eventually took a commanding 21-9 lead after a Kiley Fister service ace and a Saint Francis error. Fister served the final four points of the match, including an ace to set up game point. Another Saint Francis error gave Iowa a 1-0 lead.

Iowa led game two, 13-11 before going on an 11-2 run to take a 23-13 lead. Huffman tallied a kill to bring up game point at 29-20 and a Kremer kill pushed Iowa to a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Game three remained close, but Iowa closed the match on 6-3 run, powered by the serving talents of Fister and junior Emily Hiza. Huffman and sophomore Megan Schipper recorded back-to-back kills to end the match and improve Iowa’s record to 3-1 overall.

Iowa will take on host school Northern Colorado later tonight at 8 p.m. for a share of the Northern Colorado Tournament championship. The Hawkeyes are one of two undefeated teams in the tournament, along with Florida Golf Coast. The two teams do not play each other in the tournament.
